Manchester United have extended their winning run to five games in a row. The Red Devils beat Everton 3-0 in the Continental Cup at Haig Avenue.
United’s Lauren James opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, with Casey Stoney’s high pressing style proving a good tactic. Kirsty Hanson won the ball high up the pitch and released to 18-year-old James who slotted her effort home.
Everton struggled to deal with United’s free-flowing attack. The visitors’ lead was nearly doubled six minutes later when Hanson whipped in a lovely ball from the right, finding Millie Turner in front of goal.
However, the defender saw her effort saved from point black range by Tinja-Riikka Korpela.
Manchester United were kept on their toes as a mistake from Abbie McManus nearly saw the Toffees equalise. A good save by Mary Earps denied the home side a chance to level the score.
Hanson continued to look dangerous down the right-hand side during the second half. The Reds piled on the pressure throughout, looking fully in control of the game.
It wasn’t until James was brought down in the box after a mazy run which got United their second. Katie Zelem stepped up confidently to take the penalty and dispatched the ball into the top corner.
The third goal came from an unlikely source. Defender Amy turner capitalised on some poor defending by Everton and put the game to bed.
Late on in the game Everton’s Chloe Kelly was sent off after picking up her second yellow at Haig Avenue.
The 3-0 away win sees United go top of their Continental Cup group with a league trip to Kingsmeadow next to face Chelsea.
